Unboxing & first inspection

Check packaging and device integrity

What to look for

When you receive your Ledger hardware wallet, confirm the packaging is sealed and the tamper-evident elements are intact. Inspect the device for damage, and verify the included accessories: USB cable, recovery cards, and quick start guide. If anything seems off, contact Ledger support directly via Ledger.com/start.

  • Tamper seal present
  • Accessories included
  • No visible damage

Initial device setup

Power on, choose PIN, and record your recovery phrase

Turn on your Ledger device and follow on-screen instructions to create a new wallet. Choose a strong PIN code and write it down somewhere safe (but not with your recovery phrase). The device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase — write the words in order on the provided recovery sheet. This phrase is the ultimate backup; if you lose your device, it recovers your funds.

Security essentials

  • Never type the recovery phrase into a computer or phone.
  • Store copies in physically separate, secure locations.
  • Consider a steel backup for extra resilience.

Install Ledger Live

Official desktop and mobile companion app

Download Ledger Live from the official site at Ledger.com/start. Ledger Live lets you install cryptocurrency apps on your device, manage accounts, check balances, and perform transactions. Verify the installer’s signature when possible and keep Ledger Live updated to the latest version for security patches and new features.

Adding accounts and apps
Install only the apps you need

Open Ledger Live, go to Manager, and install the crypto apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) for the coins you plan to use. Each app takes space on the device; install only what you need and remove apps when not used. After installing an app, add the corresponding account in Ledger Live to view balances and manage transactions.

Sending and receiving crypto

A step-by-step approach

To receive funds, open your account in Ledger Live and share the displayed receive address. Always verify the address on the device screen before sharing. To send funds, prepare a transaction in Ledger Live — the transaction must be confirmed on your Ledger device. Review amounts, fees, and the destination address on the device’s secure screen before approving.

  • Always confirm addresses on the device display.
  • Double-check network / token compatibility (e.g., ERC-20 vs native tokens).
  • Use conservative fee estimation if unsure.

Advanced security features

Passphrase, multiple accounts, and device management

Ledger devices support an optional passphrase (a 25th secret word) to create hidden wallets; use this only if you understand the risks and backup requirements. You can manage multiple accounts for the same coin and use multiple devices with the same recovery phrase. Keep firmware updated and authenticate all firmware updates through Ledger Live.

Troubleshooting & recovery

Common issues and recovery steps

If your device is lost or damaged, use your recovery phrase to restore your accounts on a replacement Ledger or compatible wallet. For connectivity issues, ensure cables, drivers, and Ledger Live are up to date. If you suspect compromise, move funds to a new wallet created from a fresh recovery phrase — but do so only if you believe the original phrase has been exposed.

Ongoing best practices

Habits that keep funds safe

Regularly review device firmware and Ledger Live updates. Keep a small portion of funds on hot wallets for spending and the majority in cold storage (your Ledger). Educate yourself on phishing techniques; Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. Use hardware security in combination with secure, private backups and consider multi-signature setups for large holdings.
